Denis Stuhff

Sad news in our Association as we have lost our dear friend, Denis Stuhff. Denis died in an automobile accident on June 27th. He was such a wonderful person and brought such expertise to our association. He was a dedicated hydraulic engineer who truly loved his work and those he worked with. His face would light up when a project he was working on was nearly completed. He was instrumental in enforcing all UDOT contract engineers to be certified floodplain managers.

The Board has recently decided to rename our Excellence Award the Denis D. Stuhff Award of Excellence. Denis won this award last year at our conference and we felt it was a fitting tribute to our friend and mentor. He is the bar that we can try to measure to. It was an honor to have him on our Board and part of our Association, but most importantly as our friend. He was such a delight to be around and we will miss him dearly.

Denis D. Stuhff
1950-2012
Riverton, UT-Denis D. Stuhff, born on October 10, 1950 in Cameron, Texas to Fred and Martha Stuhff passed away on Wednesday June 27th following an automobile accident. He was a devoted husband and father and would go out of his way every day to express his love and appreciation for everyone in his family. Denis took time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life-literally stopping to smell the roses.
Denis was a senior hydraulic engineer for UDOT with over 20 years experience as an engineer. He had a deep love and appreciation for history. He was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of structures, hydraulics and environmental engineering. This depth of knowledge and his commitment to serving the people of Utah saved the state millions in tax dollars. He had a strong commitment to ethical behavior. When answering the phone he would politely respond with "Denis, how can I help?" He was a devout Catholic, a loyal friend and was kind to the less fortunate.
Above all, Denis D. Stuhff was a husband and father. He will be severely missed by his family.
Denis is survived by his wife of 35 years, Valerie; four children Audrey, Rebecca, Patrick and Emily Stuhff, mother Martha Stuhff, and brothers Michael, Max, Mark, John & Carl.

I am so glad I got to meet Denis and become his friend.

Want To Be a Certified Floodplain Manager?

Through the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), our mothership, Certification in floodplain management is offered. I offer this exam each year at our annual conference. It is a test that requires some studying and good working knowledge of the National Flood Insurance Program. There is a fee to take the exam and annual CEU's to maintain the Certification. It is a great way to show our professionalism in our field. If you are interested in taking this exam, please let me know and I will get you the study material for this exam.

Welcome To Our Blog!

It's true, UFSMA has a blog. Long over due. Now we can talk about all sorts of floodplain and stormwater issues and announce conferences and workshops better. We are looking for presentations, so if you have had a successful project or want to share with us, we would love to hear from you. Email me at judywatanabe@utah.gov and let me know your idea. Stay tuned to this blog. I hope to post to it often.
